75th Street Elderts Lane Station, Queens, NY (J/Z)
Commissioned by MTA Arts & Design Fabricated by Depp Glass Photography by Nicholas Knight
Liminal reflects the unique character of a site positioned at the threshold between Brooklyn and Queens. Inspired by the idea of the limen, a space between one state and another, the work considers transition as a fundamental condition of human experience. At 75th Street–Elderts Lane, this threshold becomes especially pronounced. The elevated station sits along a literal border between boroughs, framed by striking contrasts: the old-growth trees of Woodhaven and Forest Park, symbols of endurance and renewal, and Cypress Hills Cemetery, a landscape of memory that evokes fragility and endings.
Across the platform, the installation moves from microcosm to macrocosm. Mirrored panel sets reference the geometries of cells and molecular structures on one side and the expansive forms of galaxies and cosmic networks on the other. Between these poles, four additional panel sets explore the “in-between,” centering Woodhaven and its landscape.
Liminal incorporates imagery of the neighborhood, including Woodhaven’s old-growth trees, Cypress Hills Cemetery, Forest Park Carousel, Neir’s Tavern, Franklin K. Lane Educational Campus, and the Betty Smith House, among others. Within the rhythm of daily transit, the station becomes a contemporary threshold, an in-between space where movement, reflection, and transformation quietly intersect. The artwork invites commuters to recognize these moments of passage and the possibilities they hold for awareness within the flow of everyday life.
